Jerry Carter

Jerry Carter has been working in the broadcast industry for over 20 years. From 1981 to 1984, Carter worked as Music Director and Air Talent for WRVA-FM Radio in Richmond, Virginia. He developed music programming concepts for adult contemporary formats. He also integrated soft rhythm and blues into the music play-list to increase the listening base and reach a targeted group. Carter was the first African American to work at the radio station.

He left WRVA, and worked for nine years at WCDX-Power 93-FM in Richmond. He was a Mid-Day Announcer and Production Director. Simultaneously, Carter was working from 1986 to 1989 as a Program Director at WVST-FM in Richmond and as Operations Manager at WCVE-FM from 1989-1991. At WVST, he inaugurated Adult Contemporary/Rhythm & Blues and Contemporary Jazz formats for "baby boomers."

From 1991 to 1994, Carter served as Station Manager for WVST-FM at Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia. He was responsible for the daily operations of the station. He monitored and maintained the technical and editorial integrity of on air programming. He found and developed cultural and seasonal programming as well as on air fundraising messages. He also ensured the station’s compliance with FCC regulations, state and Federal laws and mandates. He worked with National Public Radio and radio stations at Historically Black Colleges and Universities on their programming policies.

Carter left Virginia State and he became Operational Manager and Program Director for five years at North Carolina Central University’s radio station, WNCU-FM, in Durham, North Carolina. He was in charge of the on-air sound of the station. He supervised the programming staff and volunteers. Beginning in 2000 and for the next two years, he served as Regional Sales Manager at WDRL-TV in Roanoke, Virginia. During this time, he also served as a Mid-day Drive Announcer at WVBE-FM. Carter worked for two years for Clear Channel Communication in Norfolk, Virginia as an Afternoon Drive Announcer for Vibe 105.3-FM. Since July of this year, he has been the Quiet Storm Announcer at Clear Channel’s Kiss 105.3-FM in Norfolk.

During his career, Carter has interviewed an impressive list of jazz artists including Tom Brown, Ramsey Lewis, Billy Taylor, Diane Kroll, Roberta Flack, and Ellis, Wynton and Bradford Marsalis." At WCVE, he produced "Jazz After Midnight," a weekly four-hour jazz show. This show was a forerunner for what is known today as smooth jazz and vocals.

In 1993, Carter received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Individualized Studies/Business Management from Virginia State University. His awards include Program Director of the Year for Million Dollar Music in 1997. In 1997 and 1998, The Independent Weekly News named him best jazz announcer and morning show in Raleigh/Durham.

Carter is the single parent of two daughters, Keisa and Shameka. He is also a foster parent to several sons and daughters.
